La N-acétylglucosamine est un autre membre du groupe des huit sucres essentiels. Il est le plus connu par son dérivé, Glucosamine. Aussi appelé sulfate de glucosamine et chlorhydrate de glucosamine. La glucosamine est une molécule naturellement synthétisée par les articulations. Les structures comme le cartilage, les tendons, et les ligaments ont besoin de la glucosamine pour leur constant renouvellement.
La glucosamine est fabriquée par l'organisme à partir du glucose et de la glutamine, un acide aminé. La glucosamine ainsi produite joue un rôle crucial dans le maintien de l'intégrité du cartilage de toutes les articulations. Lorsque le processus de fabrication de la glucosamine se dérègle, les cartilages se mettent à dégénérer et l'arthrose s'installe.

Il n’y pas de dose minimale indiqué, autres que pour soigner des maladies. Certains vendeurs suggèrent l’apport de 1500 mg/j pour diminuer les effets de l’Arthose (à bout de 4-6 semaine de prise quotidienne,), consulter votre professionnel de santé pour toutes prises de suppléments. Bien qu’il soit présent à l’état naturel dans plusieurs produits, il est difficilement envisageable de le prendre tel quel, une transformation est nécessaire.
