Substance organique animale présente dans les graines du cacaoyer et le chocolat, la théobromine est un alcaloïde appartenant à la classe des xanthines. Elle est disponible en faible quantité dans les feuilles de maté et dans le guarana mais également dans le thé et la noix de cola. Cette molécule, caractérisée par des effets assez proches de celle de la caféine, est un stimulant doux qui a un effet positif sur l'humeur. Cardio-stimulante, elle est également dotée de propriétés diurétiques et vasodilatatrices qui lui confèrent des vertus médicinales. Utilisée en médecine, la théobromine a des effets bénéfiques pour la santé cardiovasculaire et dans la prise en charge de la toux, de l'asthme.
Les effets bénéfiques
La théobromine est une molécule biologiquement active qui déploie divers effets dans l'organisme. Au niveau du cerveau, elle intervient sur les neurones au niveau de la synapse qui est un espace qui facilite la transmission de l'influx nerveux par les substances chimiques, notamment, les neurotransmetteurs.
Elle bloque les récepteurs d'adénosine, un neurotransmetteur qui ralentit l'influx nerveux postsynaptique et l'activité nerveux, déclenche le sommeil lent tout en contribuant à l'envie de dormir lorsqu'il s'accumule dans le cerveau. La molécule de théobromine stoppe l'action de l'adénosine ; elle empêche le ralentissement de l'influx nerveux, limite l'envie de dormir et stimule l'activité.
Elle accélère la transmission de l'influx nerveux et réduit le temps de réponse lors de la stimulation des nerfs périphériques. Ainsi, elle facilite l'effort musculaire et entraine une inhibition de la fatigue. La théobromine améliore, de ce fait, les performances musculaires et contribue à la facilitation de l'effort cardiaque.
La théobromine accroit la production de la noradrénaline et inhibe la recapture de ce neurotransmetteur qui en quantité excessive chez les sujets euphoriques. Cet alcaloïde possède, ainsi, un effet euphorisant. Il entraîne une sensation de bien être tout en améliorant l'humeur.
Aussi, la théobromine est un stimulant du système nerveux. Elle active les muscles lisses et améliore la digestion et le mouvement intestinal.
Les utilisations thérapeutiques
Sur le plan médical, la théobromine est un vasodilatateur qui accroit le calibre des vaisseaux sanguins cérébraux et entraine une réduction de la pression artérielle. Elle améliore la circulation du sang dans l'organisme et favorise la baisse de la tension artérielle.
Elle provoque également un élargissement des calibres des bronches pulmonaires, facilitant, ainsi, une meilleure respiration. Cette propriété bronchodilatatrice qui renforce les muscles respiratoires, est bénéfique aux asthmatiques. La théobromine peut être utilisée, en cas d'insuffisance respiratoire chronique.

La théobromine est un diurétique qui active l'excrétion d'urine. De ce fait, elle augmente la diurèse et intervient dans le traitement des maladies qui provoquent une rétention de l'urinaire.
